Greeting Friends! I just finished a project that included a host refresh – the customer decided to go with the HP G9 series. The config included the the HP Dual 8GB MicroSD Enterprise Midline Kit to boot vSphere. The G9 servers have onboard USB ports that these can plug into.
Off I went installing vSphere 6.0U1 using the HP Customized ISO. The G9 servers were on the accepted list for the image, so one would assume that everything would be good to go. Not so fast. As you can see below, the USB kit wasnt found. Off to figure out whats going on.
First step, I ensured that all BIOS settings were correct – No issues.
Second, I stopped by the HP Enterprise Support site and noticed there was an iLO update and a ROM update for the server. Notice below, the iLO is at version 2.03 and ROM is 1.20.
At the time of this writing, the latest version available is iLo 2.30 and ROM 1.52. To update HP Firmware via the iLO interface, click on Administration then Firmware.
Once the iLO and ROM firmware had been updated, I again booted from my HP-Custom-ESX.ISO file and attempted to install ESXi.
Perfect – The installer was now able to see the USB drive that we will boot off of.
I then proceeded with the rest of the install.
